Lear Manufacturing Facility
The Lear Seating plant was built on top of the old “Buick City”. During excavation many tunnels between the old Buick City buildings were discovered as well as foundations of older Buick facilities.
The new seat assembly facility was the first new manufacturing building in the City of Flint since 1998. The new assembly plant runs 24/7 to assemble seats for Just-In-Time delivery to the GM Truck Assembly Plant nearby. This new seating facility created a 33-acre manufacturing site to employ over 650 employees, right in the heart of Flint, MI. The building needed to address Lear’s logistical needs, parts storage, and assembly lines, as well as employee functions such as cafeteria, lockers, and a health clinic. We designed a 2-story mezzanine to create a separate but accessible office environment for the engineering and management staff. The end-result was a building that encompassed all the needs of the owner in a single space with the employees interacting together for the goals of the company. This facility was awarded the Build Michigan Award which recognizes construction management excellence. E&L constructed this building in less than one year that spanned one of the worst winters in Flint history. The quality of this facility sets a new standard for the industrial developments of the future in Flint.
